The Mediterranean diet is generally defined as a dietary pattern inspired by the traditional eating habits of populations in the Mediterranean region, particularly Greece, Southern Italy, and Spain.

A diet is an eating pattern, which may include a weight loss goal or not.

It’s not about restricting foods but changing your routines and habits instead. In truth, a healthy diet is a part of our lifestyle instead of a painful decision we take momentarily to gain something back.

The Mediterranean diet has the benefit of being well-balanced and rich in healthy nutrients. As a successful diet, it is adopted as a lifestyle and makes suggestions instead of creating painful rules.

In this article, we will go through the basics of this diet and tell you what foods people usually eat in the Mediterranean diet.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

As the name implies, the Mediterranean diet is the eating pattern adopted by people living on the Mediterranean coasts. It was not created by scientists or developed in the laboratory, and it evolved throughout the years.

People know about the Mediterranean diet because of Dr. Ancel Keys, who studied diet and foods after World War II. After studying people from the Mediterranean region (France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and other countries), he found out that the fast-food trend did not influence these people. They also recovered faster from the nutritional problems caused by World War II. Moreover, Crete Island people were found to be very active and healthy.

So, instead of being a strict food regimen, the Mediterranean diet is a lifestyle. It promotes fresh foods, plenty of fruits and vegetables, grains, cereals, olive oil, and fish.
