How to interpret ALT results?
In order to interpret ALT results, doctors need to have a complete liver panel, or at least AST levels. One of the most important measures is the AST to ALT ratio.
In most liver diseases, this ratio is lower than 1. In alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis, the AST to ALT ratio is higher than 1. This ALT increase can be transient in cases of heart disease or after the initial days of acute hepatitis.
