Alkaline Phosphatase Test (ALP) | Elevated Alkaline Phosphatase

What will doctors do with this test?

ALP tests are used by doctors to diagnose liver disease in different stages. As stated above, when we find high levels of ALP in the blood, it is usually because the liver is involved. However, doctors should also know that ALP levels in the blood also respond to bone disorders. Thus, bone conditions such as Paget disease may also cause an increase of ALP in the blood.

Luckily, there aren’t as many cases of Paget disease as they are of gallstones and other forms of obstruction of the bile tract. Thus, the test remains very useful to detect certain conditions that affect the liver function. More specifically, blocked bile ducts.
