Lifestyle modifications in cystic fibrosis
Diet
Cystic fibrosis causes malnutrition; thus, these patients may need more calories than other people without it. You may need to consult a dietitian to put a diet plan that compensates for the defective nutrients, such as fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).
Excercise
Regular exercise improves overall health, strengthens your heart, and loosens the lung mucous. Regular exercise maintains good cardiovascular fitness, which improves the CF patient’s quality of life.
Vaccination
Besides the childhood vaccines, patients with CF should take additional vaccines to prevent lung infections, such as annul flu vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine.
Avoid smoking
Don’t smoke, and avoid smokers because secondhand smoke is harmful, especially to CF patients.
Finally, cystic fibrosis is a genetic and chronic disease that affects overall health. But, close and early management provides better and longer life than before due to the early screening programs and better treatment options. Thus, -nowadays- these patients can get a better life than before.
