Easy Bruising (Ecchymosis); Symptoms, Causes, Diseases and Treatments

Ecchymosis

Treatment options

◊ For ecchymosis

Ecchymosis does not usually need special treatment. Your doctor may ask you to do more tests to find the cause if you have frequent bruising or if it is painful. Your doctor may suspend or change any medication, in case it is causing your ecchymosis.

◊ For bruises and hematomas

Usually, bruises and hematomas heal on their own and do not require any treatment. In some cases of deep muscle hematoma, surgery may be necessary to avoid tissue damage (it will be used to drain the bloodstream).

However, if there is a problem with coagulation, the doctor will suggest certain drugs that replace the missing elements, plasma or clotting factor concentrates.

◊ For petechies

For petechiae, there are as many treatments as there are possible causes. For example, chemotherapy for leukemia, vitamin B12 injections for pernicious anemia, interferon for hepatitis B or blood platelet transfusions, if needed, will work.
