2. Hepatotoxic drugs
Like alcohol, certain medications can place stress on the liver by generating reactive byproducts during metabolism, which may damage liver cells if exposure is excessive. Before approval, medications undergo safety testing to ensure this risk is minimal when used as directed. However, some drugs — particularly those used to treat serious conditions such as cancer — are known to carry a higher risk of liver toxicity.
The most common cause of drug-related liver injury worldwide is acetaminophen (paracetamol) overdose. While acetaminophen is safe and effective when taken at recommended doses, improper use or exceeding the maximum daily dose can lead to serious liver damage. (Mayo Clinic; FDA)
