Jaundice
Jaundice is the yellowish discoloration of the skin, the sclera (white of the eye) and sometimes the mouth and lips. It results from the accumulation of bile pigments in the blood. Normally, bile pigments are processed by the liver and excreted in bile. However, if the liver is diseased as in the case of fatty liver disease, or if the flow of bile is obstructed as in the case of gallstones, the bile will accumulate or even reflux back into the blood causing jaundice.
Sometimes, urine and stools can also change color. If bile pigments exist in urine, it can be dark brown in color, and if the flow of bile is completely obstructed, stools become pale. This is a serious symptom and if you experience it, a visit to your local hospital or GP is mandatory.
