Focal Nodular Hyperplasia; Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, & Treatment

Treatment

Not all benign tumors require treatment. In fact, as long as they do not cause symptoms or are at risk of complications, they are left alone. Your doctor may choose to follow-up on the tumor to detect its growth through imaging on fixed intervals. Surgery is done in the following cases:

  • If the nodules are large (more than 10 cm)
  • If they are growing
  • In some types of nodules that are at an increased risk of hemorrhage due to trauma
  • If malignancy cannot be excluded.
  • In pregnant women with growing tumors or tumors at risk of rupture

Pregnancy and hormonal therapies remain hot topics in the management of benign liver tumors. Studies have shown that hormones whether during pregnancy, hormonal replacement therapy or oral contraceptive pills do not start the tumors. However, they can cause the tumors to enlarge. Your doctor can still continue your hormonal therapy if they deem its benefits more significant than the risk of an enlarging tumor. They will monitor the growth of the tumor during that period. The same goes for pregnancy where surgery may not be indicated and many pregnant women deliver without the need for surgery.
