Diagnosis Of Gastritis
Before treatment, it is important to confirm the diagnosis of gastritis, either erosive or not before commencing treatment. Diagnosing gastritis requires the use of both laboratory and radiological investigations. Some examples are:
- Full blood count: This is a blood test done to assess for anemia. Patients with acute gastritis are predisposed to anemia as a result of gastrointestinal bleeding (5)
- Upper GI endoscopy: endoscopy is usually used to view the upper gastrointestinal tract to assess the stomach lining and locate the exact point of injury. This can also be used to take samples for biopsy when there is a need to
- Urea breath test: UBT is done to confirm the presence of Helicobacter pylori. If the test is positive, there be an increase in carbon dioxide in the breath (1).
