Those At-Higher-Risk For Getting the Hiccups

Stress

Studies have revealed that men develop hiccups more often when compared to women. However, certain factors can also affect the risk or precipitate hiccups in individuals. Such as:

  • Mental issues: Mental disorders such as anxiety, and excitement has been implicated in the development of hiccups in people. Stress has also been found to be one of the risk factors for hiccups. These conditions can cause either long or short-term hiccups in people.

  • Surgery: Post-operative patients commonly complain of hiccups and this was traceable to an individual who had abdominal surgeries that involved maneuvering of the organs or as a side effect of the general anesthesia used in surgery (4).
