The icteric phase of hepatitis A
Dark urine
This is one of the most critical symptoms of the icteric phase of hepatitis A. It is usually one of the first symptoms reported by patients, even before jaundice. The urine becomes darker because there’s an accumulation of bilirubin in the blood. Instead of being eliminated by the liver in the bile, it is handled by the kidneys and eliminated in the urine. This substance has a very dark color that stains the urine.
