Will I Ever Stop Taking my Antihypertensive Medication?

One of the commonest questions asked regarding blood pressure medications is whether they can be used temporarily, and the short answer is no. Hypertension is a chronic condition that does not go on its own, and is likely to remain. However, there are two exceptions to this rule:
- Secondary hypertension: Secondary hypertension is that which developed from a known medical condition such as kidney problems and hormonal imbalance. In this case, the condition is curable, and once the original condition is controlled, blood pressure normalizes without the need for medications.
- If the overall health is improved: This does not mean that you will stop taking your blood pressure medications, but you can decrease the number of needed medications to one if you control your lifestyle habits including smoking, unhealthy food, and if you start exercising regularly.
