Diagnosis of HPV

Diagnosis of HPV

Doctors can diagnose HPV by physically examining them. For cervical cancer for women, cervical cancer screening tests are used to find changes in the cervix that may cause cancer. Health care professionals recommend pap tests and HPV tests to diagnose HPV infection.

Human papillomavirus HPV blood tests and Pap smear tests are methods used to detect cervical cancer.

Blood Test for Human Papillomavirus HPV

According to the American Cancer Society, HPV can not spread through body fluids, blood, and semen. To detect HPV, the cells from the cervix are examined under a microscope. The virus spreads from cell to cell, infecting the mucosal cells. According to an animal study in 2019, HPV can cause infection through blood. In 2020 a pinprick blood test was introduced and proved effective for detecting antibodies for HPV 16. HPV 16 is the most common HPV related to head and neck cancers and 70% cervical cancer.

Pap Smear

Pap smear tests can detect precancerous or cancerous cells. Health care professionals use pap smear tests for screening cervical cancer.

The human papillomavirus HPV proliferates the epithelial tissue at the mucosal or cutaneous surface and is a DNA tumor virus. There are more than a hundred different variants of human papillomavirus HPV, and approximately 40 types of HPV infect genital areas. High-risk variants of human papillomavirus HPV can cause cervical cancer, while low-risk types of human papillomavirus HPV can cause genital warts. Genital warts are one of the major causes of morbidity and embarrassment or psychosocial discomfort for the patients.
