Unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia also refers to an increase of bilirubin in the blood. But instead of conjugated or direct bilirubin, we have higher unconjugated or indirect bilirubin levels. In this case, it is a type of bilirubin that has not been changed by the liver, either because there’s an increase in bilirubin production, an impairment in the uptake of bilirubin by the liver or a metabolic problem that does not allow the liver to change bilirubin.
