What suggests that a jaundice is physiologic or pathologic
As a general rule, there are a few features highly suggestive of physiologic neonatal jaundice, and when they are altered, another cause of jaundice is more probable and further investigations are needed if:
- Jaundice starts within the first 24 hours of life
- If it lasts for more than 2 weeks or starts after the third day of life
- If the level of bilirubin is more than 19 mg/dL
- If any neurological symptoms are present
- If the level of bilirubin rises rapidly at a rate of more than 0.5 mg/dL/hr.
