Liver Cyst (Hepatic Cyst) > Should I Worry If I Have a Liver Cyst?

Symptoms of liver cysts

Liver cysts are usually symptomless regardless of their type, but simple cysts, being the most common, are also the least liable to cause symptoms. However, when they do cause symptoms, they can be:

  • Abdominal pain: Abdominal pain is the most common symptom of liver cysts. It is usually dull and centered at the upper right abdomen.
  • Bloating: Bloating is another symptom of liver cysts that occurs when the mass compresses the stomach, giving a false sensation of satiety.
  • Fever: Fever is a manifestation of infection, which is a complication of cysts
  • Jaundice: Jaundice is a rare complication of cysts that occurs when it enlarges enough to compress the biliary tree.
  • Severe abdominal pain: Severe abdominal pain is uncommon and usually means that a complication has occurred which is usually hemorrhage or rupture.
  • Abdominal mass: Only in the case of polycystic liver disease or neoplastic cysts can the liver enlarge enough to be felt or seen.
