5) Acute Respiratory Failure

Acute Respiratory Failure

This is an uncommon event in cases of hypokalemia but can sometimes happen, especially in critically ill patients. These patients have a severe electrolyte imbalance and usually experience dyspnea before advancing into acute respiratory failure. It is a life-threatening complication in low potassium levels that requires urgent medical assistance.

In such cases, doctors in the emergency room would have to correct potassium levels using KCl solutions, provide oxygen with a respirator, and keep in observation even if the patient is apparently progressing positively.
