12) Jaundice
It is imperative to highlight jaundice in the context of malaria. It is not necessarily because the liver is not functioning correctly. Jaundice in malaria results from the increased turnover of red blood cells being destroyed by the disease. When they are processed, these red blood cells turn into bilirubin.
Even if the liver is intact, an overload of bilirubin could not be adequately handled. Bilirubin accumulates in the blood and causes a yellowish coloration in the skin and mucosa.
