Confronting the Weighty Issue: Understanding Obesity and its Impact on Health

Obesity is generally characterized by an excess accumulation of body fat, leading to an increased body mass index (BMI). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obesity as a BMI of 30 or higher, with overweight falling between 25 and 29.9. BMI, while a useful screening tool, does not account for factors such as muscle mass or distribution of fat, so it may not be a perfect measure of an individual’s health.
