Preventing Reye syndrome
Reye syndrome can only be managed using supportive care, and this shows how important prevention is to the management and survival of patients.
- Giving aspirin to children should be only after consulting your doctor, and never during a viral illness such as common cold. Some conditions have aspirin as a part of its management, but none should be diagnosed nor treated at home.
- If a viral illness whether gastroenteritis or a simple common cold worsens in symptoms, a visit to your GP may be necessary.
- Continuous vomiting should be taken seriously as it more often than not needs aggressive treatment and can point towards a serious condition, especially in children.
