Clinical Presentation:
The hallmark symptom of Stiff-Person Syndrome is the presence of continuous muscle stiffness, which can range from mild discomfort to severe rigidity. The stiffness often leads to abnormal posture, making it challenging for individuals to maintain an upright position. Sudden and intense muscle spasms, known as spasms, can further contribute to the difficulty of movement.
Moreover, these spasms can be triggered by various stimuli, such as stress, noise, or sudden movements. The unpredictable nature of these spasms adds an extra layer of complexity to the daily lives of those with SPS, impacting their ability to perform routine activities.
In addition to motor symptoms, individuals with SPS may also experience heightened sensitivity to stimuli, such as touch or noise, and may develop anxiety or fear related to their symptoms. The psychological impact of living with a rare and often misunderstood disorder can be significant, influencing a person’s overall quality of life.
