What Causes Liver Failure? | Liver Failure Causes

Chronic Liver Failure

Damage to the liver develops slowly over a long period. It is an irreversible disease that requires medical treatment to control the disease’s progression. Chronic liver failure can result in cirrhosis if uncontrolled. Cirrhosis is a replacement of healthy liver tissue by scar (fibrous) tissue. According to the American Liver Foundation, the most common cause of cirrhosis in the United States is alcoholism. The second leading cause of chronic liver failure is hepatitis C.

Early symptoms of chronic liver failure include nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and diarrhea.

Late symptoms include:

  • Jaundice (yellowish discoloration of skin and eyes)
  • Hepatic encephalopathy ( mental confusion)
  • Bleeding easily
  • Vomiting blood

In chronic liver failure, the doctor will try to control the progression of the disease.

“It is far better to stop the liver disease before it gets too serious.”
