Bleeding episodes
Many proteins are synthesized in the liver, including clotting factors important for platelet aggregation. Thus, blood coagulation can be compromised in these cases, and bleeding episodes start to appear in the skin and other parts of the body. It is imperative to rule out gastrointestinal bleeding, which can be massive and life-threatening in a decompensated patient with esophageal varices that break apart and start to bleed. This usually happens in cirrhosis, when the liver becomes resistant to the natural flow of blood, causing portal hypertension.
