Ascites
We mentioned ascites before as a cause of abdominal distension. It is essential to highlight that this only happens in very severe cases of hepatic damage, especially in hepatic cirrhosis. The liver becomes unable to synthesize enough proteins, which generally keep the liquid inside the blood vessels. They tend to leak out and accumulate in the abdominal cavity. It may also accumulate in the legs, causing swelling and a sensation of weight and tiredness. Moreover, portal hypertension may also contribute to the process because the blood that cannot pass through the liver regurgitates and tends to leak out of the blood vessels, ending up in the abdominal cavity.
