Blood in the Urine
Even though pain and urinating frequency are very important signs of bladder cancer, they are not the most common. Up to 90% of new diagnoses of bladder cancer are made by noticing blood in the urine and running tests to determine where it comes from.
Blood in the urine, also known as hematuria, appears in cases of bladder cancer as a result of the formation of new blood vessels to feed the growing tumor.
These blood vessels are not normal and will start breaking or tearing continuously, causing changes in the color of the urine, and sometimes red and clearly visible blood. Even though it is one of the most common symptoms, keep in mind that other health conditions may also cause blood in the urine, and one of the most important is kidney stones. As a result, if you notice changes in the color of your urine, wait before drawing any conclusions and consult your physician instead.
