Disease caused by Aflatoxin
The major disease caused by Aflatoxins is cancer, more specifically liver cancer or hepatocarcinoma. The mechanism of producing cancerous cells is still not known exactly. Still, scientists apprehend that Aflatoxins induce proto-oncogenes formation in the body. These are the proteins that code for mutagenic cells and cause cancer.
Another study published in Science Direct states that Aflatoxins are clinically the most important class of mycotoxins. These are Aflatoxin B1 that target the liver and the kidneys, immune system, and other organs of the body. Aflatoxin is one of the most potent carcinogens. It acts by reacting with the nucleic acids and proteins of the cell membrane to form adducts. This is a unique way of metabolism in the human body, but the metabolism of AFs varies in different species.
