How would a doctor diagnose you with alcoholic liver cirrhosis?
Your doctor can diagnose you after asking about your medical history and discussing your history of drinking. Your doctor will also run some tests to confirm cirrhosis, such as:
- Liver function tests show that the level of AST is two times that of ALT.
- Blood tests show:
- Anemia due to too little iron
- High ammonia level
- High blood sugar levels
- Leukocytosis (increased white blood cells)
- Low blood magnesium
- Low blood sodium
- Low blood potassium
- Coagulation profile
- Electrolyte assessment
- Ultrasound
- CT scan
- MRI
- A liver biopsy confirms the diagnosis. It shows unhealthy liver tissue when a sample is removed from a biopsy and studied in a pathology lab.
