Complications of alcoholic cirrhosis include
- Portal hypertension (increased blood pressure in the portal vein that travels through the liver)
- Esophageal varices: Thin esophageal blood vessels, which bleed easily
- Encephalopathy: ammonia stays in the blood that passes through the brain and causes mental deterioration and change in behavior.
- Brain edema
- Infection: bacterial and fungal sepsis
- Low blood sugar
- Kidney failure
- Hepatic coma
- Liver cancer
