What other tests could help doctors diagnose liver conditions?
ALP levels are not the only ones to be ordered in a liver panel. They are usually accompanied by others:
- Additional liver function tests, especially bilirubin in patients with cholestasis symptoms
- Serum copper levels, useful to rule out Wilson disease
- An abdominal ultrasound, which is useful to detect gallstones and other bile duct obstructions
- A liver biopsy if the ultrasound detects a mass causing obstruction to the bile ducts
