Symptoms

The symptoms for amebiases may range from mild to severe, depending on the patient’s immunity and their body’s ability to cope with the infection. While some individuals may experience only mild abdominal cramps, others may have watery diarrhea. Some severe cases may also lead to bloody diarrhea, with the expulsion of mucus. These symptoms also differ between young and old individuals. While the younger patients are found to suffer from a more severe infection, the older individuals do not. This severe infection may cause complications like Toxic megacolon, which has a high mortality rate.
The symptoms may not always be limited to the intestine, but some individuals may also suffer from extraintestinal manifestations. This includes an Amebic liver abscess, which, although very rare, can develop after 2 to 4 weeks of the initial infection.
