Cytokines are not all harmful. Some of them have anti-inflammatory effects, such as interleukin 4 and interleukin 10. Different types of mussels tested in inflammatory models show a strong suppression of inflammation through inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. However, it also promotes the activity of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-10. In other words, consuming mussels daily changes the body’s chemistry into a prominent anti-inflammatory state.
