What is AST in blood test? | Aspartate Aminotransferase

What other tests could help doctors diagnose liver conditions?

If you had abnormal AST levels, your doctor might order additional tests for a complement to their diagnosis:

  • Additional liver panel tests, including prothrombin time and bilirubin
  • Serology to rule out different types of hepatitis viruses
  • Overdose and drug abuse testing when hepatotoxic drugs are suspected
  • Ethanol levels in the blood to rule out alcohol intoxication
  • Iron and copper levels in the blood to rule out hemochromatosis and Wilson disease
  • An abdominal ultrasound to see the liver and its structure
  • A liver biopsy when a suspicious mass or tumor is found in imaging tests
