What other tests could help doctors diagnose liver conditions?
If you had abnormal AST levels, your doctor might order additional tests for a complement to their diagnosis:
- Additional liver panel tests, including prothrombin time and bilirubin
- Serology to rule out different types of hepatitis viruses
- Overdose and drug abuse testing when hepatotoxic drugs are suspected
- Ethanol levels in the blood to rule out alcohol intoxication
- Iron and copper levels in the blood to rule out hemochromatosis and Wilson disease
- An abdominal ultrasound to see the liver and its structure
- A liver biopsy when a suspicious mass or tumor is found in imaging tests
