What other tests could help doctors diagnose liver conditions?
High levels of bilirubin may require additional testing, including one or a combination of the following exams:
- Other liver function tests to evaluate liver function and bile elimination
- Serologic testing to identify different types of hepatitis virus
- Ethanol intoxication tests to evaluate the possibility of alcoholic liver disease
- An ultrasound scan to check the structure of the liver and detect liver masses or gallbladder stones
- A liver biopsy when abnormal liver masses are found
