Symptoms of Blood Clots in the Legs
- Swelling: Swelling is perhaps the first noticeable symptom or sign of blood clots. Blood clots in the venous system of the lower limbs cause engorgement of blood and swelling of the legs. In this case, one leg is noticeably more swollen than the other. The swelling can, however, be trivial and only detectable by your doctor.
- Pain: Pain is also common in cases of blood clots. The pain is not so severe and is usually dull aching but moving the foot may cause its exacerbation. The main cause of the pain is in the calf.
- Bluish Discoloration of the Toes: Your toes may become blue because blood flow through the veins is obstructed.
- Shortness of Breath and Chest Pain: One of the most serious complications of blood clot of the leg is pulmonary embolism. It basically means that a small part of the blood clot dislodges from the leg veins and into the heart then to the lungs. This causes obstruction in the lungs blood vessels. Sudden chest pain and shortness of breath in someone who developed a blood clot on the leg or is at high risk, pulmonary embolism is highly suspected.
