What are other complications of a blood clot in the leg?
Other than pulmonary embolism, another complication of an untreated blood clot is what is called post-phlebitic syndrome. This condition results from the destruction of valves within veins of the lower limb. Valves within veins ensure that blood flows in one direction upwards, and with their destruction, blood stagnates in the legs, causing permanent swelling, pain, and the development of varicose veins.
Varicose veins are superficial veins that are connected to the deep ones, and when the pressure within them increases, they become permanently dilated under the skin.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for post-phlebitic syndrome, and the only measures that can be done are the treatment of the varicose veins and wearing stockings.
