Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery; Everything You Need to Know

What Happens During the Surgery?

The surgical procedure starts by numbing the area which is going to be operated on. If the patient is very anxious, they might be given medications to keep them calm. General Anesthesia may also be given for the surgery; however, it is very unlikely and rare.

During an open Carpal Tunnel Release surgery, the surgeon will first start by making a two inches long incision in between the patient’s wrist and their palm. On the other hand, the endoscopic Carpal Release surgery is much less invasive and requires only a half-inch incision in your wrist and another half-inch incision in your palm. The purpose of this surgery is to remove the excess pressure on the ligament in the Carpal Tunnel, which prevents the compression of the Median nerve.

After this is successfully done, the doctor finishes up the surgery by closing up the opening spaces and suturing the skin. A large bandage may be applied to the wrist, as this not only protects the operated area but also prevents excessive movement of the wrist.

Since this is a comparatively simpler procedure, the patient is not required to stay the night and may be discharged after a while. Even though the person can return back to their routine the next day, the complete healing of the operated area may take a few months, after which the symptoms are not expected to return.
