Risk Factors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Risk Factors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The factors which might increase one’s chances of developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may be divided into extrinsic, intrinsic, and neuropathic factors.

Extrinsic Factors

The Extrinsic factors are mainly those which increase the fluid balance of the body. These include health conditions like hypothyroidism, pregnancy, obesity, kidney failure, menopause, and congestive heart failure.

Intrinsic Factors

Intrinsic Factors include lumps and tumors, which may form inside the tunnel and disrupt its occupied volume.

Neuropathic Factors

Neuropathic factors are those which affect the median nerve and its functioning, resulting in the numbness and pain experienced in Carpal Tunnel. These risk factors may include vitamin deficiencies, alcoholism, and exposure to certain toxins.
