Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; Causes, Treatment & Prevention

Carpal Tunnel Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Carpal tunnel can be made using various methods, and it may be divided into several steps. When an individual first goes to a doctor’s clinic, they will first be asked a series of questions by the doctor and to report their symptoms. They may complain of numbness, tingling, and pain at night or during an activity during the day. They may also complain of constant pain in the thumb, along with the second, third, and part of the fourth finger. This is then followed by a physical exam conducted by the doctor where they test for the patient’s sensory and motors functions. The common Carpal Tunnel test includes Sensory tests, motor tests, and special tests like Hoffman Tinel and Carpal Compression Test.

The sensory tests for Carpal Tunnel include examination of the first three fingers and their palmar aspects. The radial half of the fourth finger can also be included in the sensory examination. This allows the doctor to detect the presence of any abnormality in the thenar eminence and webspace.
