Patients with blood malignancies may also develop splenomegaly because these blood cells are defective and become trapped and metabolized by the spleen. The organ increases in size in response to the overload of work. Patients with leukemia may also develop additional symptoms such as fatigue, malaise, tachycardia, anorexia, weight loss, joint pain, and bone pain.
