Another ocular manifestation of the disease is photophobia, which is defined as a high sensitivity to light. Patients develop periorbital edema and other structural changes affecting their ocular nerve, which may in part explain this symptom. A neurologist should evaluate patients with photophobia and Epstein Barr virus due to the possibility of a neurological complication with meningitis or encephalitis.
