What Is Considered a Dangerously Low/High Ferritin Level?

Conditions where ferritin level is decreased

Ferritin level is a good indicator of the level of iron and iron stores in the body. The level of ferritin may be decreased in the following conditions:

  • Iron deficiency anemia: Iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of decreased ferritin levels in the blood. It is usually the reason why ferritin is ordered in the first place.
  • Vitamin C deficiency
  • Hypothyroidism, which is the decreased level of thyroid hormones. It is worth knowing that hypothyroidism can cause anemia by itself.
  • Restless legs syndrome: Restless legs syndrome is a rare condition where there is a continuous unpleasant sensation of the legs that obliges the patient to move them continuously once it occurs. Patients with the condition could not sleep well and suffer from chronic insomnia. Many risk factors are present including iron deficiency, kidney disease, and diabetes. Iron deficiency is perhaps the reason behind the low ferritin levels found in those patients.
