Complications of galactosemia
If the doctors didn’t diagnose and treat the baby early, toxic products of galactose would deposit in the body, which can be life-threatening.
These complications are as follows:
- Liver failure: the liver can’t work to perform its function.
- Kidney damage: the kidney can’t filtrate the blood.
- Brain damage
- Osteoporosis (weak bones that are liable to repeated fractures)
- Sepsis: life-threatening condition due to the body response to the infection
- Shock (No enough blood reaches the vital tissues)
- Cataract: cloudy clear lenses
