Hiccups that last more than 48 hours
Most times, when hiccups last beyond 48 hours, they are usually pathological, that is they are occurring as a result of a diseased state and they are commonly classified as follows:
Central Nervous System (CNS) Disorders
Infection affecting the central nervous system or when there is a tumor infestation or infiltrating the CNS can lead to depletion of the normal body physiology thereby affecting the diaphragmatic control areas which thereafter can result in hiccups.
Some examples of such disease conditions are:
- Encephalitis
- Meningitis, inflammation of the brain meninges
- Multiple sclerosis
- Cardiovascular accident, CVA
- Others are traumatic brain injury, due to accident or blunt injuries, and tumors.
