Gilbert’s Syndrome GS; Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Treatment of Gilbert syndrome

Owing to how benign the condition is, most patients do not need any treatment, only the exclusion of other conditions. In some people, however, the condition can be severe enough that they need some medical therapy. The commonly used drug phenobarbital helps the liver process bilirubin, decreasing its level and improving the condition.

Another important aspect of treatment is genetic counseling. Your doctor may refer you to a geneticist, whose role is to counsel you and your partner on the possibility of having a child with a similar condition and how early testing should take place. Generally, not many additional considerations need to be taken and even if your child has the condition, they may only need to be followed up. If you are expecting, your doctor may recommend giving birth in a hospital with a specialized neonatal intensive care unit to give the best care to your newborn who is at an increased risk of neonatal jaundice.
