Hepatitis D; Causes, Prognosis, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Prognosis of hepatitis D

Patients with a coinfection of hepatitis B and hepatitis D have a poor prognosis as compared to an infection of hepatitis B alone. Still, their prognosis is good when treatment is initiated in the early course of the disease. Alcohol consumption, overlapping liver diseases, older age, and long-standing duration of the coinfection are all risk factors that make the prognosis obscure and sometimes reserved.

There’s a higher risk of fulminant hepatitis when patients are coinfected with HBV and HDV. When fulminant hepatitis ensues, it is an acute and very severe condition that often results in the patient’s death or an urgent need for a liver transplant.

Besides liver failure, chronic disease may end up in hepatocellular carcinoma. In some cases, hepatitis D infections cause autoimmune manifestations and other complications.
