Can you prevent hepatitis?
Prevention is the best medicine, and some types of hepatitis have been eradicated in many countries through successful public health policies. Vaccination plays an essential role in these policies, as it allows your organism to create defenses against hepatitis viruses without actually getting the disease. However, vaccines are not always available, especially hepatitis E vaccines, and hepatitis C does not even have a vaccine.
Depending on the type of hepatitis, we have a series of preventative measures. In general, we should consider the following steps to prevent hepatitis:
- Wash your hands and adopt proper hygienic measures
- Keep individuals with hepatitis A and E infections in quarantine and maintain proper hygienic measures upon contact.
- Do not share your syringes and stop using illegal drugs
- Avoid having multiple sexual partners and practice safe sex
Doctors also play a significant role in preventing hepatitis infections by testing blood before transfusions and using appropriate safety measures before, during, and after every invasive procedure.
