Medical treatment
Medical treatment is, as mentioned above, not a substitute to liver transplantation, but it can help improve the condition for the short term. It includes:
- Medications that improve blood flow to the kidney, such as dopamine.
- Medications that raise blood pressure and prevent the activation of the renin-angiotensin system, such as vasopressin analogues.
- Medications that cause vasoconstriction of the blood vessels of the kidney. Although it may seem paradoxical, but medications of this class including saralesin help the kidney “ignore” the hypotension that leads to hepatorenal syndrome, improving filtration and function.
- Renal replacement therapy: Renal replacement therapy is a broad range of procedures including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. They are not always used in all patients, but they are viable options.
