Surgical care
Other than transplantation, some other temporary surgical procedures can be done including shunts. Shunts are shortcuts created to relieve the pressure on the portal circulation, which is the main cause of the cascade of events that led to hepatorenal syndrome. Shunts can be done between various parts of the systemic circulation and parts of the portal circulation. Their side effects include acceleration of central nervous system deterioration since they shunt toxic substances away from the liver and into the brain directly.
