Hepatorenal Syndrome (HRS) > Liver and Kidney Failure!

Is hepatorenal syndrome preventable?

Hepatorenal syndrome is a preventable condition, and it can be prevented through avoiding the precipitating factors that can lead to its occurrence including:

  • Preventing spontaneous bacterial peritonitis through the administration of antibiotics on a regular basis for some patients.
  • One of the most common causes of hepatorenal syndrome is a procedure called large volume paracentesis or LVP. To avoid HRS in this procedure, your doctor will infuse albumin, which is a special protein to help stabilize your circulation.
  • The best method to prevent HRS is early liver transplantation, especially when ascites is present. This helps prevent any complication that comes with liver diseases including bloody vomiting, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites and, of course, hepatorenal syndrome.
