Medications causing hepatotoxicity

Medications causing hepatotoxicity

As mentioned above, nearly all medications have the ability to cause hepatotoxicity, but some are much more common than others, and the most common ones include:

  • Acetaminophen: Acetaminophen or paracetamol is the most common medication to cause hepatotoxicity. This is usually seen in patients who either take excessive amounts of paracetamol for suicidal attempts or those who take it with other medications that alter the metabolism by cytochrome enzymes.
  • Amiodarone: Amiodarone is a medication used for the treatment of heart conditions that result in irregular heartbeats. It can cause both lung and liver damage.
  • Antibiotics like amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin
  • Some antipsychotic medications like chlorpromazine.
